BICSI Installer 1 (INST1®) is a non-renewable certificate. It demonstrates entry-level knowledge and skills to install information and communications technology (ICT) systems. The certificate validates basic knowledge in the proper and most current methods of installing ICT-related cabling within the confines of a commercial building structure. Skill sets include but are not limited to pulling cable, terminating, and testing copper and coaxial cable.
Conduct field planning and implementation activities including identifying cable properties, interpreting blueprints, inventorying materials, verifying safety plans, and applying labeling schemesIdentify and distinguish properties and types of copper and fiber cable to support appropriate material selection and installation planningBuild and prepare telecommunication spaces including telecommunications rooms, equipment rooms, entrance facilities, and terminal equipment locationsInstall bonding and grounding infrastructure in compliance with applicable codes and standards for ICT cabling installationsInstall cable support systems including cable trays, ladder racks, raceways, continuous and non-continuous cable supports, and under-floor support systemsPrepare telecommunication outlets at walls, floors, utility columns, modular furniture, ceilings, exterior, and other locations including hazardous environmentsInstall sleeves, cores, slots, poke throughs, and inner duct for fiber to support pathway infrastructure within commercial building structuresInstall firestop and smoke barrier systems at cable penetrations in compliance with fire and building codesPerform cable pulling setup and pull copper and fiber cable through conduit, open ceilings, and backbone-riser configurations from top down and bottom upPerform copper and fiber cable terminations including IDC multi-pair and four-pair, coaxial, and fiber terminations using correct connecting hardwarePerform copper and fiber cable testing to verify installation quality and compliance with performance standardsPerform copper cable troubleshooting to identify and resolve installation defects and performance issuesRemove abandoned cable and perform retrofit work within existing ICT cabling infrastructureProvide structured cabling systems to support integration of converged systems including paging, sound masking, nurse call, building automation, life safety, and elevator systemsAdhere to local, state, and federal fire and building codes and ICT industry standards throughout all installation activities
