Technicians are specialists skilled at working with complex systems who perform highly technical installations and diagnostic testing on structured cabling systems (SCS) and network components. Technicians must perform duties in a professional manner in accordance with industry best practices.
Conduct field planning and implementation activities including identifying copper and fiber cable properties, performing pre-construction and onsite site surveys, developing job plans, interpreting blueprints, inventorying materials, verifying safety plans, applying labeling schemes, and closing out jobsBuild and prepare telecommunication spaces including telecommunications rooms, equipment rooms, entrance facilities, and terminal equipment locations for copper and fiber installationsInstall bonding and grounding infrastructure in compliance with applicable codes and standards for structured cabling system installationsInstall cable support systems including cable trays, ladder racks, raceways, continuous and non-continuous cable supports, under-floor support systems, and inner duct for fiberPrepare telecommunication outlets at walls, floors, utility columns, modular furniture, ceilings, exterior, and other locations including hazardous environmentsInstall sleeves, cores, slots, poke throughs, and firestop and smoke barrier systems to support pathway infrastructure within commercial building structuresPerform cable pulling setup and pull copper and fiber cable through conduit, open ceilings, and backbone-riser configurations including fiber-specific pulling techniques and air-blown or air-assist fiber installationPerform copper cable terminations including IDC multi-pair and four-pair, coaxial, and modular plug crimp terminations and fiber terminations using correct connecting hardwarePerform fiber splicing using fusion and mechanical methods and copper splicing to extend or connect cabling infrastructurePerform copper cable testing and Tier 1 fiber testing using power meters and Tier 2 fiber testing using OTDR to verify installation quality and compliance with performance standardsPerform copper cable troubleshooting and basic and advanced fiber cable troubleshooting using power meters, visual fault locators, and OTDRPerform retrofit site surveys, identify active circuits, execute cutovers, and remove abandoned cable during structured cabling upgrade operationsApply physical network topology and network component concepts to support converged ICT installations including security, alarm, wireless, distributed antenna systems, and passive optical networksProvide structured cabling systems to support installation of converged systems including paging, sound masking, nurse call, building automation, life safety, and elevator systemsAdhere to local, state, and federal fire and building codes and ICT industry standards throughout all copper and fiber cabling installation activities
