The Operating Engineers Certification Program (OECP) is designed to provide members of the International Union of Operating Engineers a means to obtain a valid and reliable certification that accurately assesses their competence in crane operations, thereby directly promoting a safer jobsite environment for the worker, the public, and the industry.
Apply crane safety standards and regulations to operations involving energized power lines, rigging equipment, and personnel platformsInspect and remove wire rope, slings, shackles, and rigging components from service per applicable standardsConduct pre-operational procedures including site assessment, equipment inspection, leveling, and documentationOperate crane functions including hoisting, swinging, multi-function lifts, and load pick-and-carry activitiesConfigure and monitor operator assist devices including anti-two-block, LMI, boom angle, and drum rotation indicatorsExecute emergency response procedures for power failure, power line contact, fire, and personnel injury situationsApply lockout/tagout procedures and load communication protocols to maintain worksite safetyPerform load calculations including dimensions, weight, overload conditions, and boom deflection effectsSecure and dismantle crane equipment following normal and adverse post-operational proceduresInterpret load charts to determine crane capacity, boom configuration, parts of line, and lift-specific deductionsCalculate lifting capacities and boom length requirements using range diagrams and work area diagramsApply manufacturer footnotes, LMI limitations, and operator assist device relationships when configuring lifts
